Our green statement
We are a small family business in a valley that people travel a long way to see. Keeping it worth seeing is part of the job. Here is what we do, and what we have not sorted out yet.
Solar on the roof, a heat pump in the annexe
Solar panels power the buildings, and the surplus goes back to the national grid. The annexe is heated by a heat pump. The main house is still on oil central heating, which we hope to change in the next few years.
Lighting is LED throughout, the appliances are energy efficient, and the heating runs on smart thermostats. There is an outdoor socket for charging an electric car, slowly, which is better than none.
Thirty trees a month
We plant 30 trees every month through Carbon Neutral Britain, and we are a certified carbon neutral business.
Bins, compost and cleaning
We recycle everything we can, and the bins are laid out so you do not have to guess. There is a food waste bin in the kitchen and a composter in the garden.
We clean with eco-friendly products, and the washing powder and dishwasher tablets we leave out are the same. The toiletries in the bathrooms are Faith in Nature.
The river matters more than any of it
We make our living from the beauty of this valley. Without a clean River Wye, that beauty could be spoiled beyond repair, and there would be nothing here worth selling and less worth living beside.
So we support the campaigns run by the Save the Wye Coalition and Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, and we have signed the Rescue Our Rivers petition. The river's problems are far bigger than one holiday cottage. We would still rather be on the record about them.
Shorter journeys
We buy products and services from nearby businesses and farms wherever we can, and the welcome pack is made up of local produce. It is better food, and it has travelled less far to reach you.
Some of it you can reach without starting the car. The Red Lion is walkable, the village store is in Peterstow, and Pengethley Farm Shop is not far up the road.
