The cottage
This is the long version. What is in each room, what the beds are, what we provide so you do not have to pack it, and where the house is honestly difficult. Ten guests across five bedrooms, in a house from 1850 and the annexe across the garden from it.
Four bedrooms, and room to spread out
The fabric is 1850; the fittings are 2022, when we refurbished throughout. Every window looks out at fields, and the nearest neighbour is not close. Heating is oil central heating. There is no air conditioning.
Downstairs there is the kitchen with its dining table, a shower room, and the living space. Guests tell us there is plenty of it, which is what makes a big group work: somewhere to sit and talk, and somewhere else to go when you have had enough of talking. The TVs are 43-inch with Chromecast, so you can cast Netflix or iPlayer using your own login. There are board games and books, and a dedicated workspace if someone has to send an email.
Upstairs are four of the five bedrooms and the family bathroom, which has a bath and no shower in it. The shower is the one downstairs. Between the two, ten people can get ready in the morning without much queueing. The house has stairs and steps, so everyone staying in the main house needs to be able to manage them.
A self-contained cottage, ten metres from the back door
The annexe is its own small house, about ten metres from the main one. On the ground floor there is a double bedroom, an accessible shower room, and its own kitchen with a level entrance. Upstairs there is a living space with a sofa bed. It is heated by a heat pump.
It suits anyone who wants a bit of separation without being far away. Grandparents who would rather not do stairs to bed. A couple who want their own front door. Teenagers who want to stay up later than everyone else. It is close enough that nobody feels sent to the bottom of the garden, and separate enough that a baby's bedtime does not stop the rest of the evening.
Five bedrooms, seven beds, ten people
The annexe living space upstairs also has a sofa bed, and we can put out a camp bed on request, so there is some flexibility in how the ten places are arranged. A travel cot is available for babies. Ten guests is our maximum and we do hold to it, so please count everyone, including children, before you book.
Set up for cooking for ten
The kitchen has a dishwasher, an electric cooker and oven, a microwave, a fridge and a freezer, a kettle and a toaster. Coffee is covered both ways, with a cafetière and a Nespresso machine. There are wine glasses, and the cooking basics you would want to find so you are not buying oil and salt on the first evening.
Guests tell us the pots and pans are the thing they notice. There is enough of everything to cook one meal for ten people rather than two meals for five. The main house has a dining table, and the annexe has its own kitchen if a few people want to eat on their own.
The garden, the games shed and the playground
There is a fence the whole way round and nobody overlooking any of it. That is the reason a lot of people book: dogs can be let off, small children can be let out, and nobody has to keep counting heads. The patio takes an outdoor dining table, a charcoal BBQ, and a firepit that tends to get lit whatever the month.
The games shed went up recently and guests have told us it has proved popular. Inside there is a pool table and a foosball table. It is where teenagers disappear to when it rains, and where the adults end up once the children have gone to bed. The playground is the other new thing: climbing frame, slide, swing.
The kit you would otherwise have to pack
For babies and toddlers we have a cot and a travel cot, a high chair, stair gates and window guards. There is children's tableware in the kitchen, and books and toys sorted roughly into 0 to 2 and 2 to 5. It means the car boot can hold something other than plastic.
Dogs are welcome. The fully fenced garden is the main reason people bring them, along with the local walks. Guests have brought three dogs and got on fine. We ask only that you keep to the house rules and treat the garden as somewhere other dogs will come after you.

There is no air conditioning, and there are no security cameras on the property. The main house has an upstairs bathroom with a bath but no shower in it; the showers are the downstairs shower room and the annexe wet room.
The details worth knowing before you book
Nothing here should be a surprise on the day. If something is not covered, email us and we will tell you straight.
- Check-in from 16:00
- Check-out is by 10:00. Earlier arrival or a later departure is sometimes possible, so ask and we will tell you honestly whether it works around the changeover.
- Self check-in
- There is a lockbox. You do not need to meet anyone or arrive within a window.
- Wifi and working
- Around 72 Mb, with ethernet available and a dedicated workspace if you need to put in a day's work.
- Parking
- Three to four cars on site, plus space on the lane if you arrive in more. One of the spaces on site is marked for disabled parking.
- EV charging
- A standard outdoor 3-pin socket. Bring your own adapter. We provide a Type 2 adapter.
- Laundry
- Washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and a drying rack. Useful on a week's stay with children or dogs.
- What we provide
- Bed linen and towels for everyone, and Faith in Nature shampoo and body soap in the bathrooms.
- Safety
- Smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
- House rules
- No parties or loud music, because this is a quiet country home. No smoking indoors. Maximum ten guests. Extra visitors by prior arrangement. Guests need to be able to manage stairs.
Partially accessible, and here is exactly how
We would rather tell you the truth than lose your trust on arrival. Field Cottage is partially accessible. It is not fully wheelchair accessible, and we do not describe it that way. The main house has steps and stairs, and all four of its bedrooms are upstairs.
What we do have is an annexe with a ground-floor bedroom and an accessible wet room next to it, reached by a ramp. In practice that works well for older or less mobile guests, and for part-time or assisted wheelchair users. A full-time independent wheelchair user would find the garden paths and the main house difficult. If you tell us what you need, we will tell you plainly whether this house can do it.

This our 3rd visit to Field Cottage did not disappoint. The addition of the Games Room proved popular. As usual the properties were clean and well equipped.
The rural location was perfect for us, with three dogs, with plenty of beautiful local walks. The house itself is very comfortable and well equipped, the kids loved the garden.
Set on a quiet lane with a beautiful garden, this was a perfect spring getaway. The house has excellent facilities with lots of pots and pans and plenty of living space to relax and socialise.
