Things to do near Field Cottage
Everything below is somewhere we actually send people. A pub you can walk to, days out along the Wye, places that hold up in the rain, and the discounts local businesses offer our guests.
Closest to the cottage
The three places we use most. The Red Lion you can walk to and back, which matters when someone wants a pint.

- 0.3 miles from our gate, five to ten minutes on foot. Home-cooked food, and a play area that keeps toddlers busy through a Sunday lunch.
- The Yew Tree Inn
- A cider pub in Peterstow owned by Ross Cider, with a large beer garden and pizzas on some days.
- Peterstow Village Store
- Your nearest shop, in Peterstow at HR9 6LB.
Eating and drinking nearby
A short drive opens up a lot. Ross-on-Wye is ten minutes away if you want more choice, but these are the ones we go back to. Supermarket delivery works here too, if you would rather arrive to a full fridge.
- Pengethley Farm Shop
- A well-stocked farm shop with produce from local suppliers. Our first stop before cooking for a crowd.
- The Loughpool
- A pub and bakery a short drive away.
- The New Inn
- A gastropub cooking local produce, for when you want to make an evening of it.
- Cafe at Pengethley Garden Centre
- Lunch and afternoon tea, with a garden centre to wander round afterwards.
- Glewstone Court
- A local wedding venue that also serves food and afternoon teas.
On and around the river
The Wye runs through all of this, and Symonds Yat is the stretch people come back talking about. It is an easy drive from the cottage, as is the Forest of Dean on the other side of the river.
On land, the walking starts more or less at the door. Field paths and quiet lanes run straight out from the cottage, which suits dogs and small children as much as it does anyone in proper boots.

For a wet day
The weather here does what it likes. These are the places we point people towards when the forecast turns, all of them under a roof.

Worth the drive
There is enough good country within an hour that you can be out and back inside a day. Hereford is the short hop. After that it depends whether you want books, woodland or hills.

- Twenty to twenty-five minutes' drive, with shops, places to eat and enough to fill an afternoon.
- Hay-on-Wye
- The book town, over on the edge of Wales. Bring a bag you do not mind filling.
- The Forest of Dean
- Old woodland across the river, with walking, cycling and villages to stop in.
- The Malverns
- A ridge of hills with long views and walks that earn you lunch.
- The Black Mountains
- The Welsh border hills. Bigger, emptier and quieter than anything closer to the cottage.
